Birchard Scholarship Established for Montrose Students

Courtland Birchard

The Community Foundation of the Endless Mountains is pleased to announce the formation of the Courtland Birchard Scholarship Fund that will provide tuition assistance to graduating seniors from Montrose Area High School who will attend Broome Community College. Mr. Birchard is an alumnus of both schools with a lasting fondness for each of them, and it is his wish with this permanent endowment to assist students who will have a similar connection. He served his country in Korea and returned to use his G.I. Bill Education Benefits for additional training. This new scholarship is his way to both pay it forward and give back to his community.

Mr. Birchard graduated from Montrose High School in 1948 and he looks forward to providing the first award next spring during the 70th anniversary year of his own graduation. He went on to graduate from what was then Broome Technical Community College with a degree in electronics, but many local citizens will be familiar with Mr. Birchard’s intricate bluestone engravings that adorn many homes and organizations in northeastern Pennsylvania and beyond. For years he was an annual fixture at the Harford Fair where he exhibited his art work and demonstrated his technique.

Additional donations to honor Courtland Birchard’s personal generosity, and to further assist future generations of deserving Montrose students, may be sent to the Courtland Birchard Scholarship Fund at The Community Foundation 270 Lake Avenue, Montrose, PA 18801 or online at www.community-foundation.org.
