Frank J. Valvano Memorial Scholarship Established

July 14, 2008: Family and friends of the late Frank J. Valvano have recently established a college scholarship in his memory to benefit Tunkhannock Area graduates. After many years of being a teacher and Tunkhannock Area School District administrator, Mr. Valvano retired in 2007 from his Assistant Superintendent position to become a House Parent at the Milton Hershey School with his wife Pamela. He was killed suddenly in a motorcycle accident earlier this year and will be missed by many in the Tunkhannock area and beyond.

This permanent scholarship was established with the Tunkhannock Area School District Foundation, an Affiliate of The Community Foundation of Susquehanna & Wyoming Counties. The scholarship is intended to provide tuition assistance to a student who personifies qualities that were a priority to Mr. Valvano, namely academic achievement, community involvement, enjoyment of our natural environment, enrichment from athletic competition, and appreciation for art and music. The first recipient of the Valvano Scholarship is 2008 graduate Nicole Wootten who will attend Shippensburg University.

More information and an application for the scholarship for 2009 will be available in the Tunkhannock Area High School Guidance Office, or in the Scholarship section of The Community Foundation's web site. Those wishing to honor the memory of Mr. Valvano, and to enhance the assistance provided to future generations of Tunkhannock graduates, may send donations to the Frank J. Valvano Memorial Scholarship at The Community Founation 36 Lake Avenue Montrose, PA 18801.
