Robert Wood of Montrose

RobertWoodMr. Wood, a native of Montrose, was the driving force in the formation of the Minute Men Ambulance Company.  He had been a medic in the Army, and after the service he was a first aid instructor with the Red Cross for more than three decades.

On November 17, 1955 Mr. Wood and a handful of his fellow citizens met to create the ambulance company at a time when there was no such service in Montrose, nor was there a hospital.  The first ambulance was a repainted delivery truck equipped with a stretcher, splints, First Aid kit, and an oxygen tank.

For many years the ambulance company operated out of Mr. Wood s home, with his wife Alice answering the emergency telephone calls.  Mr. Wood passed away in 1985 and his close friends Dr. Ray Bennett, Morris H. Baker, Morris C. Baker, and David Baker established this scholarship in his memory.Ambulance
